Feminine Fridays: Answer to a Reader

Hello Ladies!

Welcome to  "Feminine Friday"!  Recently, we received a comment on our blog with a question about thick hair and bobby pins.  :)  So, for this Friday's Feminine Friday we decided to answer that question!  Enjoy our ideas and feel free to leave a comment with yours!

Question:

Also where do you girls get your bobby pins? I have very thick hair and every kind of bobby pins that I've tried doesn't hold my hair for long since it's so long and thick! Thanks for the help!
Beth

Answer:

Hello Bethany!

Thank you for your question.  :)

My hair is very long and thick too so I understand where you are coming from.  I have found that longer bobby pins (with the grip on the tip of them) work better then the small ones and recently I read somewhere that bobby pins work better if you cross them over each other.  So in other words instead of using one bobby pin-- us two and "criss-cross" them together.  I've found that this works very well!

Another thing that a few of my friends recommended to my sisters and I and which we have now started using are mini hair claws.  Even though they are small-- they work great!  I've found that with these I can put my hair in a bun, put it up, clip it back, and so on...  I've even seen a friend do a french twist.  The clips come in all sorts of shapes and sizes and there are so many different hair styles you can use them for.  In fact my sisters and I use them nearly everyday and right now as I type this I'm wearing them!  ;)

Here's a link to some on Amazon .  I hope you're able to come up with some wonderful ideas!

Have fun!

Ecclesiastes 7:8

Eden found that this morning's reading for Evening and Morning was on End of the Matter's theme verse.  So, here it is!
---

Morning and Evening | Spurgeon
December 30th
Morning Reading

"Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof."  ~Ecclesiastes 7:8

Look at David's Lord and Master; see His beginning. He was despised and rejected of men; a man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. Would you see the end? He sits at His Father's right hand, expecting until His enemies be made his footstool. "As He is, so are we also in this world." You must bear the cross, or you shall never wear the crown; you must wade through the mire, or you shall never walk the golden pavement. Cheer up, then, poor Christian. "Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof." See that creeping worm, how contemptible its appearance! It is the beginning of a thing. Mark that insect with gorgeous wings, playing in the sunbeams, sipping at the flower bells, full of happiness and life; that is the end thereof. That caterpillar is yourself, until you are wrapped up in the chrysalis of death; but when Christ shall appear you shall be like Him, for you shall see Him as He is. Be content to be like Him, a worm and no man, that like Him you may be satisfied when you wake up in His likeness. That rough-looking diamond is put upon the wheel of the lapidary. He cuts it on all sides. It loses much—much that seemed costly to itself. The king is crowned; the diadem is put upon the monarch's head with trumpet's joyful sound. A glittering ray flashes from that coronet, and it beams from that very diamond which was just now so sorely vexed by the lapidary. You may venture to compare yourself to such a diamond, for you are one of God's people; and this is the time of the cutting process. Let faith and patience have their perfect work, for in the day when the crown shall be set upon the head of the King, Eternal, Immortal, Invisible, one ray of glory shall stream from you. "They shall be Mine," saith the Lord, "in the day when I make up My jewels." "Better is the end of a thing than the beginning thereof."

Feminine Friday: A Recommendation!

Hello Ladies!

Welcome to our third post of "Feminine Friday"!  Today, we wanted to recommend one of our favorite online hair styles and tutorial websites for ladies with long hair!  :)

About a year or so ago our mother found a website called Rapunzel's Resources which not only teaches you how to do different styles, but also gives the instructions picture by picture!

Bethany with an Edwardian Hair Style
The style index on Rapunzel's Resources is one of my favorite pages.  On this page RR has included every single style with a picture linked to the tutorial!

Eden always likes two French Braids!
Besides simple and modern styles, RR also features historic and old movie screen styles! :)  I recently tried the "Cecily Half-up" and found it to not be only a pretty way to do my hair, but also very easy.

The "Cecily Half-up" on Shiloh
So, head on over to Rapunzel's Resources and enjoy their incredible tutorials!  Be sure to leave us a comment and let us know what you think.  :)

A New Stitch!

I recently learned a new stitch!  Actually....  I basically already knew how to do this stitch, but since usually takes me so long to do--I never really practiced it.  :) I decided to try it out again and I was excited to see that I have increased in my speed!!  So..........  here's the stitch (if you know the actual name for it, please do leave me a comment at the end of this post and tell me what it is!).

"Knit, Purl, Knit, Purl,..."
Thankfully, I able to get lots of practice with this new stitch and here are the results~
"Baby Boy Set"
Hopefully, I will be able to do a few more sets like this one in the future... and maybe I'll start working on a baby girl set (smile)...  my little sister has a pattern ready for me that she *really* wants me to try-out.  :)  We shall see!

Feminine Friday!

Hello Ladies!

Welcome to our second post of "Feminine Friday"!  Life has been so bust around here that we've missed the last few Fridays--sorry!  :)

In light of yesterday's post about being a Shining Light.  We decided to share an article with you by our second sister, Bethany from our magazine.  We hope you will be encouraged through it to be a light as unto the Lord!
A few years ago my Father, brother, sister, and I were “remodeling” a trailer.  Actually, we were making this trailer into a chicken coop, so it was really not getting any nicer than what it already was like!  Anyway, I remember that this particular night, we had been working very late and it was very cold outside.  But we were not cold if we were inside the trailer!  You see, we had a heat lamp in there that made the indoors nice and warm.  In fact, it was so warm that I didn’t want to leave that trailer to go and get another tool!  But as I recall I did have to run some sort of errand with my sister, Eden.  So as we hurried back through that dark and chilly night we saw the trailer with the light aglow in the windows.  We were drawn to that light.  It was a symbol of warmth and illumination.  And when we finally stepped inside, our cold fingers were forgotten and we didn’t have to worry about tripping over something in the dark!

So, join me today, as we discuss how to be a light for the Light of the World!

Let’s jump in by first looking at some scriptures about our commands from our heavenly Father to be lights, then we’ll look at why this is important, and lastly, let’s examine the dangers that we can fall into if we become prideful.

Where in the Bible are we commanded to be lights?  In Matthew 5:14a, we see a wonderful command that is meant for all of us to obey.  It is so clear; there is no way to argue it!  Ye are the light of the world.  Also, in Ephesians 5:8 we see this verse: “For ye were sometimes darkness, but now are ye light in the Lord: walk as children of light:” So, we have a command from our Lord and we are to obey.  But why are we called to be

lights?  To answer this, let’s move on to our next point.

Why is this important?  Why are we called to be lights?  Not only are we called to be lights, but we are also called to be salt as well.  What does that mean?

These are all great questions.  But what’s even more exciting is the answers to these questions!  And many times I have found myself pondering these same questions and being delighted at their answers.  So let’s not hesitate a moment, but move onto the first question.

Why is this important?  Or in other words, why does it matter that we are lights?  Well, do you remember the story about us fixing the trailer?  The light in the trailer drew us to itself.  We were stumbling in the darkness until we jumped back into the trailer and into the shining light.  Well, this is just like what happened to us before we were born again.  We were stumbling in the darkness of our sin.  We had no way to tell where we were going.  But when we saw Jesus, the Light of the World, we were drawn to Him, we became saved, transformed, and became as lights.  John 8:12, “Then spake Jesus again unto them, saying, I am the light of the world: he that followeth me shall not walk in darkness, but shall have the light of life.

Why are we to be called lights?  We are to be lights so that when people see us, they will be drawn to us and will be able to see Jesus through us.  Matthew 5:16 says, “Let your light so shine before men, that they may see your good works, and glorify your Father which is in heaven.  Before we move on to the next question, there’s one quick thing I want to bring up here and that is this: if we are lights that are shining brightly, we will not only attract non-Christians, but we will draw Christians to Jesus as well.  Many times I have seen young Christian girls (even some who I had just met) come to me like I was a magnet.  They are drawn to me because I have Jesus as the Light of my life.  And I can use this as way to help them grow and help brighten them for Jesus.

Not only are we called to be lights, but we are also called to be salt as well.  What does that mean?  Matthew 5:13a, “Ye are the salt of the earth:” May I ask, what do you reach for every time you eat scrambled eggs?!  Salt!  But what happens when you’re done?  You get thirsty.  Salt makes us thirsty.  It makes us crave for water.  We need to be “salty” so that every time someone else is with us, they become thirsty.  Thirsty for what?  Thirsty for living water, Jesus Himself, the Water of Life.  Revelation 22:17, “And the Spirit and the bride say, Come. And let him that heareth say, Come. And let him that is athirst come. And whosoever will, let him take the water of life freely.” When people are with you, do they get thirsty for living water?  If not, you are not salty enough.  Luke 14:34, “Salt is good: but if the salt have lost his savour, wherewith shall it be seasoned?”

BEWARE!!!

Beware if you fall into the dangers of pride!  We can look like Christians who are full of light, but on the inside we think it is because of ourselves.  We can, too easily, become self-righteous and prideful.  Suddenly, Jesus is not the light, instead, we are.  It’s because of our “gooder than good” selves that we are righteous.  We may think, “Ugh!  Just look at so-and-so!  I can’t believe she does that!  What kind of a Christian does she think she is?”  But what do we have to boast about?!

We are rotten sinners as well.  And if we are saying things like that, we’re just being whitewashed sepulchers.  On the outside we look clean, bright, and pure, but on the inside, we are filled with decaying, stinky, and rotting dead men’s bones.  So much to being prideful now, right?!  No, we must realize that we are not the ones who are the “good people”.  There is no “good person”.  We’ve all sinned and trespassed the law of God.  And it’s only because of Him that we are saved!  Our own good works are as filthy rags.  Isaiah 64:6a, “But we are all as an unclean thing, and all our righteousnesses are as filthy rags;” No, my friends, we have nothing to brag about.  We are helpless.  We must rest on God for strength.

So, as I conclude this article, I would like to encourage you to be a light.  Remember, the last part of Matthew 5:13 says, “A city that is set on an hill cannot be hid.”  We want to be so bright that a person who is just walking down the road will be blinded by our light for Jesus.  Shine!  Illuminate this dark world with the love of Christ!

November 18th- Difficult Experiences You’re Now Thankful For

I love the Thankful topic for today!  Difficult Experiences which we are now Thankful for!  The best one I can think of is last year's Thanksgiving when our pump (we are on a well) broke and we had no water--on Thanksgiving day!  Here is our picture post we did during that time: "Running Water..." and here is another post which I will also post below.  :)
---

Be Thankful!

Every time you do the dishes… Be Thankful!
Every time you wipe the table down... Be Thankful!
Every time you mop the floor… Be Thankful!
Every time you take a warm shower… Be Thankful!
Every time you wash your hair… Be Thankful!
Every time you take a sip of water… Be Thankful!
Every time you clean the toilets… Be Thankful!
Every time you brush your teeth… Be Thankful!
Every time you feel warm water with clean soap on your hands… Be Thankful!
Every time you wash your face… Be Thankful!
Every time you water your animals… Be Thankful!
Every time you water your garden… Be Thankful!
Every time you do a job you hate (that involves water)… Be Thankful!

We’ve been learning to be thankful for the running water which most people always expect to daily be there for their use. If you are not thankful… try resisting to turn on the sink when you need a glass of water, go without a shower for a while, don’t wash your dishes, don’t flush your toilets, forget about your flower pots, don’t wash your hands, don’t wash your face,… are you thankful yet?

I certainly am thankful for water!!

Praise God from whom all Blessings Flow,

~Shiloh | November 28, 2009

I think I could speak for my entire family when I say that through this difficult experiance we are now so Thankful for water!  More so then before!  :)  So, today we are Thankful for two things....  This Difficult Experiance and Water!

Introducing Our New Blog Series~

Eden came up with the idea...  Bethany liked it....  and Shiloh said, “Lets do it!”

With our new blog series: “Feminine Friday” we hope to post each Friday with different things we do in our everyday lives...  So, maybe one week we’ll post about a new project, or a recipe from our kitchen, or a practical tip!  The ideas are endless!  Feel free to comment on these posts to ask any questions or share your “Feminine Fridays” with us!  We’d love to hear from you!
Can't wait to see how the "end of the matter" with this project turns out!
So, to kick off this very first Friday....

Today, a few of the ladies in our home went to JoAnn Fabric Store.  We were blessed to find a couple random items we needed and Shiloh was excited to find the yarns on sale!  She bought two rolls of brown yarn (a project in the making for one cute little fellowJ) for $5.00—quite a deal!

We all made it home in time to finish up our evening chores and get dinner ready.

In light of goings on today, we are dwelling on this verse section from Proverbs 31:18 a. “She perceiveth that her merchandise is good:”  May we grow to become more like this godly, virtuous woman each and every day!

Praise the Lord for His Blessings!
